Essay by Sakagami Shinobu, James Lee Byars: Days in Kyoto, for MoMA PS1
In preparation for the exhibition James Lee Byars: 1/2 an Autobiography at MoMA PS1, ARTOKA translated a series of essays by contemporary art historian Sakagami Shinobu, "James Lee Byars: Days in Kyoto," recounting the artist's time in Japan, from 1958-67. The essays originally appeared in the publication AIDA in spring of 2013.
The essays were translated into English to aid the curators of the retrospective at MoMA PS1 in understanding Byars's life in Japan and how it affected his work.
The translation will appear in a forthcoming book.

Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery - The Way of Painting
ARTOKA was very pleased with the opportunity to translate the catalogue for Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery's exhibition The Way of Painting, curated by Hori Motoaki.
This exhibition surveys the state of contemporary painting in Japan, presenting 120 works by 24 artists. The catalogue includes a series of excellent essays by leading authors and critics examining the ways painting relates to the conditions of the 21st century.

For the exhibition Schema - Sukima at Laure Genillard Gallery in London, ARTOKA contributed a translation of Kitagawa Tomoaki's essay "A Form That Reflects the Shadow of Death," which appears in the exhibition catalogue.
Curated by David Connearn, Schema - Sukima brings into dialogue the work of three Japanese artists and their British contemporaries:

Gary Woodley - Yoko Terauchi
The exhibition looks at the ways in which artists’ interpretations of space, colour and material are informed by two convergent but distinctly different cultural traditions. These 'perspectives' have been brought into alignment by the presentation of works with similar subject matter and attributes, to focus on both the particular character of the artists’ intentions and their understanding of relationship between art-objects and ‘things’.

Arts Alive is a non-profit organization that connects disadvantaged communities to art, through art-making workshops, performances and concerts, museum tours and conversations, and other artist- and educator-led programs. Catering to people such as the elderly who require care, children with intractable disease, children who have escaped abusive households living in a foster housing, and people with premature dementia, Arts Alive hopes to bring joy to people living in distress through the power of art.
Arts Alive also runs an experiential interactive art program, Art Communication Program (ACP) with the support of MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) for people with dementia and their families and caregivers.
