In preparation for the exhibition James Lee Byars: 1/2 an Autobiography at MoMA PS1, ARTOKA translated a series of essays by contemporary art historian Sakagami Shinobu, "James Lee Byars: Days in Kyoto," recounting the artist's time in Japan, from 1958-67. The essays originally appeared in the publication AIDA in spring of 2013.
The essays were translated into English to aid the curators of the retrospective at MoMA PS1 in understanding Byars's life in Japan and how it affected his work.
The translation will appear in a forthcoming book.
